How to Redesign a Website Without Losing SEO
A successful redesign is more than a new look. Learn how to protect your pages, redirects and organic traffic during a website migration.
A redesign can improve or destroy your visibility
Changing a website design may look like a purely visual project. In practice, a redesign often changes URLs, content, navigation, code and performance. If these changes are not planned, Google can lose the signals accumulated over the years and important pages may disappear from search results.
The right approach is to treat a redesign as both an SEO migration and a business project. The new website should be clearer and faster without deleting what already worked.
1. Audit the current website before designing
Measure the value of a page before removing it. Export indexed URLs, pages receiving organic traffic, important queries, backlinks and associated conversions. Google Search Console, analytics tools and server logs can complete this picture.
- identify pages generating clicks and enquiries;
- find content ranking for local queries;
- record URLs referenced by partners and directories;
- classify each page: keep, merge, improve or redirect.
2. Design a stable URL structure
A good URL is readable, stable and aligned with the page intent. Avoid changing URLs without a reason. If a new structure is necessary, document a complete map from every old URL to a relevant destination.
For a bilingual Canadian website, language versions must be consistent. French and English pages should reference each other with appropriate hreflang tags, and each version should contain genuinely reviewed content rather than an unedited machine translation.
3. Prepare 301 redirects
A 301 redirect tells users and search engines that a page moved permanently. It helps guide visitors and transfer some signals from an old URL to its relevant replacement. Avoid redirect chains, redirecting everything to the homepage and destinations that do not match the original intent.
Test your redirect map with real URLs. Review internal links too, so they point directly to the new addresses.
4. Preserve content that performs
Do not replace a well-ranking article with a shorter text simply because the new design is minimal. Improve the content while keeping the answers, examples and proof that satisfy search intent. Add useful local information for Quebec and Canada when it genuinely supports the service.
Every important page should have a unique title, a clear description, one primary goal and a logical next step. Structured data must represent content that is actually visible on the page.
5. Test before and after launch
Create a protected staging environment. Check canonical tags, robots directives, the sitemap, links, forms, images, mobile performance and redirects. After launch, monitor 404 errors, indexing, impressions and conversions for several weeks.
A temporary fluctuation can happen while a site is re-evaluated, but a persistent drop should be investigated quickly. Do not change several critical variables blindly.
